Introduction
They're perfect. In fact, they're someone you could see yourself spending the rest of your life with. A decent person with a good job or business in search of a good, honest partner to settle down with.
You or someone you know may be dating this person online right now. However, be warned. Things aren't what they appear to be. In reality you're very likely talking to a criminal sitting in a cybercafe with a well rehearsed script he's used many times before. He's hunting through chat rooms, dating sites and social networking sites searching for victims, looking to cash in on romance. If you're are over 40, recently divorced, as I was, or a widow, elderly or disabled then all the better in his eyes. Scammers are adept at psychological profiling and use any weakness they find to their advantage.
They use psychological tricks to lure their victims in, use poetry (you'll see some of his "love letters" later) and even gifts to get them under their spell, then once you are there, will try to reach for your wallet, all the time declaring their "undying love" for you. The scam may take the form of asking you to cash a cheque for them through your bank account because they are "out of the country" and unable to cash it themselves, or they may come right out and ask you to send money to help them out of a fabricated "financial difficulty" they claim to be experiencing. These are all lies used to try to make them easy money from an unsuspecting victim.
They often work in shifts with a script they follow, just like telemarketers. That's why they seem to always be online and why, at times, you may feel you're talking to a different person. You may be! There may be times when they've forgotten what you talked about before or even call you a different name. If they don't respond for a few minutes it's because they're either looking up the information they need in order to answer you, are consulting with a more experienced member of their "team" or chatting with somone else at the same time.
The man I was talking to is from Nigeria but, of course, I didn't know this in the beginning. I later learned Nigeria is cash based society. All services, all hotel rooms, all hospital services must be paid for in advance. Scammers may claim they're being held hostage in the hospital. Call the hospital directly and ask about the "patient". If they're asking for money to be released from the hospital, they aren't really in the hospital. He pulled this one on me, too. I was a real sucker.
If a "true" Nigerian has a problem, they call a family meeting. They have family meetings for everything. They don't get on the internet, pick a stranger off a dating site, fall in love within a few days and immediately ask for money. If this happens to you, RUN AWAY!
If they claim they're an American overseas, tell them go to the American Embassy for help. They highly recommend that individuals doing business in Nigeria be registered with the Embassy for their safety.
Here's a supposedly new twist on the Scam:
When the scammer is caught by their victim and admits their crime, the next thing they do is swear they actually fell in love with the victim. Some people walk away but others believe what they're being told. I was one of them. After all, the victim has such strong feelings for their scammer, how in the world can he/she not have feelings for them? So the victims who believe and stay are sucked into a whole different scam which turns out to be a whole lot more dangerous. The scammer then works to get their victims love and trust. This happened to me. I actually felt I was in love with this man.
Fake Investigators:
There are also so-called “detectives” who are offering their services for a fee to track down a person's scammer. They promise to identify who the scammer is and, for an additional fee, have them arrested and brought to justice. Many people have been contacted by fake officials asking for money to assist. This is a continuation of the scams.
The FBI says there is NO WAY for anyone to really trace who the scammers are from this end. I reported him, so I know. They're cloaked behind phony names and identities. If the so-called investigator is based in Nigeria or any other West African country, 99.99% they're also a scammer. They make it sound good, saying they will help you. After they have supposedly located your scammer, then they need additional money to have them arrested and brought to justice. The truth is all they are going to do is help you open your wallet again and give them more money.
The sad truth is, for every real profile you see on the internet, there are numerous false ones pretending to be your perfect mate and using photographs stolen from modeling or social networking sites. The people in the photographs are as much victims as the people who get scammed for hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars. Internet romance scams and other related crimes are very real, and they are affecting -- even ruining -- lives throughout the world.
I won't say my life has been ruined, but it has certainly been affected in a negative way. It's been two years, and I'm still struggling. All my credit cards have been turned over to collection because I maxxed them out to send money to this man and couldn't afford to make the payments. I'm several thousand dollars in debt, and my credit is ruined.
The best weapon against this crime is education. The more people that are educated in the ways the scams work, the harder it is for the scammers to make money and the more scammers who can be put out of business. That's one of the main reasons I decided to publish our conversations as a book. You're going to hear it from the horses mouth, so to speak.
If you have never been the victim of a scam, you may read this and wonder how anyone could be so stupid. If you have been a victim, then you know how easily your heart can become involved. When that happens, common sense often goes out the window. Whoever you, it's my sincere desire that this book either educates you or comforts you. You are not alone.
Prologue
I wish I’d known then what I know now.
It all began six months after my divorce when I decided to try online dating for the first time. In the beginning, I knew him as Edward Moore, a construction engineer from Kansas (I think) going to Africa in a few days to work on a bridge project. I didn’t know anything about scammers back then. I didn't know he was already showing me a big red flag. I thought it was exciting, and I believed him. I had no idea I was such a perfect target. I’d never even really heard about scammers. At least not the “internet romance” kind. If I had known, I would have realized he fit the profile perfectly. For instance, the letters he sent me - all copied from online. His story of going to Africa to work. No web cam. No phone. All marks of a scammer.
The more we chatted, the more I began to feel something wasn’t right. I began to suspect very quickly he wasn’t who he said he was, yet I couldn’t stop. I was completely captivated. Obsessed. I don’t know what I was. Stupid? Probably. Naïve? Definitely. Lonely? Vulnerable? Stockholm syndrome? Whatever it was, I was hooked. And hooked big time.
We met on Match.com, which, by the way, he said is the best site for what they do. I don’t have our first conversations from there but, he disappeared after only two days, so you won’t be missing much. Of course, I later learned that this “disappearing act” was another huge red flag. Too little too late for me, unfortunately. I wasted almost a year of my life and gave away close to $3000.
Love Letters
*Here are some of the letters he sent to me. If you do a search, you can probably find them online somewhere like I eventually did. And if you're talking with someone who sends you anything like this, you better believe it's a scam and get the hell out of Dodge! I'm serious. If you let your heart and feelings take over, you're asking for trouble. Believe me, I know.*
~ Let me start by saying that I thank God every night since I found you. You came into my life when everything seemed so dark but you provided the light to find my way. I've never been so certain of anything in my life like I am of us. You have totally changed my outlook in life and I thank you for that. I never thought that someone could love me like you do, but guess what? I love you that much too. I feel as if I'm walking over clouds just thinking about you. You make my life complete. I know you've said we could do foolish things while in love, but you know what? With you I wouldn't mind being a fool for the rest of my life.
~ I love you so much and I know you love me too. I know that others looking into our relationship might think that we're saying too many foolish things too soon but they just don't know how we feel about each other. There's nothing foolish about the things I've told you, I meant every word I said. I love you and for you and Jeff *(his imaginary son)* I would do anything, I love you both so much. Today I promise you that I would do anything in my power to make you a great person, outstanding mother and loving wife. I LOVE YOU!!
~ If I could pick any woman in the world to spend every moment of the rest of my life with it would be you. If I had a choice to have all the treasures in the world or spend my life with you, I would not even think twice... I would be with you. I am not sure how I got so lucky to have you in my life, but I know I am the luckiest man alive, because I am with you.
~ In all the dreams I've had in life, being with someone as great of a person as you, seemed impossible to find. You are everything I dreamed of and even more. I am writing this to you to tell you in front of the world... I LOVE YOU.

Hey there good looking,
Just got up and want to say hello before I start my day. I'm going to do my workout, take a shower, have a smoothie, then off to school I go.
I have a question for you - What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? Do you have anyone you get together with? If you don't have any special plans for this year, I would like to invite you to join me and my family. That might be too much for you this soon, but I want you to know the invitation stands.
My sisters and I usually go to Xxxxxxxxxx, XX. That's where I was born and all of my mom's brothers and sisters live. It's like our family reunion every year. We like it because it's a chance for us to see almost everyone at one place. There could be as many as 70-80 people coming and going throughout the day.
We go to this church my aunt and uncle attend. They have a room that is just the right size, with a nice little kitchen on one end. Everyone (except us!) brings food and just lays it out on the tables. There is a gym where the kids can play and shoot baskets or throw balls around or whatever. And there are usually lots of kids there, too, so Jeff would have someone to play with all day if he wants to.
It's very casual and laid back. You are more than welcome to come if you would like to. I think you might enjoy it. Of course, it's completely up to you and your work schedule..
My one sister lives in Xxxxx. She and her husband are coming up for the holiday. It would be a chance for you to meet all of my family at one time. Kind of scary, huh?
