The 1870's in the United States marked the post-war era of the US War Among The States. As in all periods of post-war times a country is gripped with economic downturn. The moving from a war economy to a peace time economy. This was the case in the United States, along with trying to govern and reconstruct a South that had suffered the rages of war. One third of this nation was in ruin. The South had been beaten into submission. Lee had laid down his sword at Appomattox. The South could have fought on, but Lee had had enough blood shed, and seeing friends and fellow soldiers dead, dying, and maimed for life.
